Emmevaneth (“lantern-wing, of the”) is a 8-star constellation of The Other Sky, spanning 15° of the far northern sky. Its brightest star is Tessen, magnitude 2.75.
The story
The Skaien hold that Emmevaneth was an unbeliever who kept a light burning for a ship that had already come home, and was set turning and has not been released. North of 28° it never sets, which is taken as evidence that the sentence has not ended. Tessen, the cold lamp, is the eye; the remaining 7 stars are counted against the turn. Those who keep the old year sing to it badly, on purpose, so it does not grow proud.

How this was made
Emmevaneth was not designed. It was grown outward from Tessen, the brightest star in this part of the sky that had not already been claimed by another figure, absorbing near neighbours until it ran out of them — which is, near enough, how the constellations of the real sky came about. Its name is Ilmenic, an invented agglutinative language: every name on this site decomposes into morphemes and can be translated.
